National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) was started in 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area by a small group of writers who wanted to make some noise: they set out to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Now, NaNoWriMo has spread across the globe, and Philadelphia is home to one of the most active chapters (“regions”).
Each year, the Philadelphia Free Writers Association partners with Philadelphia Regional National Novel Writing Month to offer write-ins and talks about novel writing. In 2015, our staff volunteered to host over 40% of the local events.
